To legally download movies, I have come to appreciate Vudu - Watch Movies. You can stream the movies directly from their cloud or download them to a device for future viewing (on their proprietary player only). Their library is large and impressive and there is a large library of “free to watch” movies (with commercials).

If I’m looking for a little more obscure or budget movie, I will often find it on YouTube for free - or if not, possibly on Amazon.com: Rent or Buy(they seem to have more b-movie content than most). If you purchase on Amazon, it is similar to Vudu in that you can stream or download (usually) but I try to keep my movie library in a single place, so I mostly avoid it.

However…I have come to the conclusion that the best way to keep and enjoy your movies is to have a physical copy with a cloud backup. The reason for this is that if any of these companies goes out of business or simply stops supporting movie streaming or downloading, you lose your entire library due to their proprietary encoding. And then there’s the region limitations…

So I would strongly urge anyone who reads my answer to just buy the blu-ray or DVD. If you buy it from WalMart, it will most likely come with a digital version coupon from Vudu, so you can start streaming the movie immediately from anywhere. And when you decide to create your own streaming service that you control, you can rip the disc to a hard drive and set up your own Plex media server.
