Not every song on the airwaves will have a nostalgic effect years after its release, and this is why these old Nigerian songs have earned the right to be called classics.
We get it, sometimes artists make music to suit the current trends and state of things in their respective environments. For instance, the “Kupe Dance” track and several shaku shaku-themed songs from this year would probably only make sense in coming years to people who enjoyed the dance trends. However, some of these old Nigerian songs have transcended time and changing trends to earn spots on everyone’s throwback .list.
As a result of the sheer musical quality in addition to the nostalgic effect they bring, people from older and much younger generations can enjoy and relate to some of these songs. Moreover, many musicians from this decade have sampled many classic songs – from Simi’s “Joromi” to Flavour and MC Loph’s “Osondi”.
If you need to catch up on classic Nigerian songs dating back to at least a decade ago, we’ve got you covered. Here are some of them:
1. Onyeka Onwenu’s highlife jam, “Iyogogo”
2. The birthday party anthem from our childhood, Evi Edna Ogholi’s “Happy Birthday”
3. The Nigerian Mother’s Day anthem, Prince Nico Mbarga’s “Sweet Mother”
4. Sir Victor Uwaifo’s “Joromi”, a classic that our fave, Simi sampled in her 2017 single of the same name
5. The original twerk anthem, Lagbaja’s “Konko Below”
6. Styl Plus’ breakup anthem, “Olufunmi”
