If idolatry is banned in Islam, and images of the prophet are disallowed, why is it okay to have a picture of the Kaaba?

You are correct, these are deviations (bid’aa) of Islam, which are haram (forbidden).
pictures of the ka’abaa are allowed Bc Muslims do not worship the Ka’baa, it is a gathering place for Muslims, it is basically a house of worship.
The symbol of the half moon and star is related more to the holy month of Ramathaa, Bc Islam follows a Lunar Calendar and Muslims use the sighting the moon to know when it is their first day of fasting.
Having these trinkets and ornamnets or wearing them them for decoration or safety along with verses from the Quran are either haraam or extremely frowned upon bc this creates some sort of belief with that person that this verse of the Quran they are wearing is protecting them in some sort, that is why Muslims should just refrain from all these innovation in religion altogether.

You are absolutely right.....these do not represent Islam and Islam officially has no symbol nor does it authorise the use of any of the symbols you mentioned or any others. Hope this helps.

Symbloism , as far as I know, is not idoltary. that is like saying there is idoltary in the US because it has a Flag.
In Islam living images/idols are not allowed, as it is deemed equating to diety worship. The ka'aba is NOT AN IDOL and no one WORSHIPS THE KA'ABA. It is a direction and the holiest PLACE in Islam .
Its PICTURES are as holy as the PICTURE OF NIAGRA FALLS

Islam has a horror of Idolatry and the sin of worshiping idols is the worst of all sins — but what is the Black Stone that all the believers, worship, kiss and adore?
